CAG finds Rs 1,514 crore idle in Rajkot municipal funds ahead of ULB elections

The Comptroller and Auditor General has reported that Rs 1,514 crore allocated to Rajkot’s municipal corporation remains unspent as the city prepares for urban local body polls.
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has highlighted a significant amount of unutilised funds in the accounts of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC). According to the audit report, Rs 1,514 crore earmarked for various civic projects and schemes remains unspent as of the latest financial statements.
The finding comes at a sensitive time, with the state preparing for urban local body (ULB) elections that could reshape municipal governance across Gujarat. Officials from the municipal corporation have been asked to explain the delay in fund utilisation and to outline corrective measures.
CAG officials noted that the idle balance could affect the delivery of essential services such as water supply, waste management and infrastructure development, especially when the new council is expected to take charge soon after the polls.
The state government has pledged to review the audit observations and ensure that the pending resources are deployed promptly to meet the city's development needs. No further financial penalties have been announced pending a detailed response from the RMC.
