The Comptroller and Auditor General has revealed that nearly two‑fifths of households benefiting from the Jal Jeevan Mission in Jharkhand are unhappy with the scheme’s implementation.

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched by the central government to provide piped water to every rural household, has seen mixed results in Jharkhand. According to a recent audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), 40% of beneficiaries in the state are dissatisfied with the scheme’s execution.

The audit report highlights gaps in water supply reliability and maintenance of the distribution network as key reasons for the discontent. While the mission aims to deliver 20 liters per capita per day, many households report intermittent supply and quality issues.

The findings raise concerns about the effectiveness of JJM in Jharkhand and suggest that the state government must intensify efforts to address infrastructure shortcomings. The audit calls for a review of procurement processes, better monitoring of water quality, and stronger accountability mechanisms.

In response, the Jharkhand government has acknowledged the audit and indicated that it will work with central authorities to accelerate remedial measures. The state’s officials have promised to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the affected areas and to expedite repairs and upgrades.

The CAG’s report underscores the need for sustained investment and oversight to ensure that the Jal Jeevan Mission meets its promise of reliable, safe drinking water for all rural households in Jharkhand.
