The cabinet will vote today on whether to approve prosecution of Vijay Shah for his remarks about Colonel Sophia Kuraisi, with the proposal to be sent to the Governor if approved. The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for August 31.

Vijay Shah, a senior political figure, sparked controversy after making remarks about Colonel Sophia Kuraisi that were widely criticised as disrespectful. The statements prompted calls for legal action and a formal investigation into possible violation of service‑person dignity provisions.

The Union cabinet convened today to consider the government's request for sanction to prosecute Shah. Members reviewed the evidence and the legal opinion submitted by the Ministry of Law and Justice. A majority vote in favour will result in the sanction letter being forwarded to the Governor for final approval.

If the sanction is granted, the case will move to the courts, and the Supreme Court has already fixed August 31 for a hearing on the matter. Legal experts say the outcome could set a precedent for how political speech about armed‑forces personnel is treated under Indian law.

Stakeholders, including opposition parties and civil‑society groups, are watching the proceedings closely, noting that the decision will reflect the government's stance on accountability for public officials.
