The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won the inaugural election for the Silchar Municipal Corporation in Assam, marking the first time the civic body has been contested.
The election was held recently to elect members of the newly formed Silchar Municipal Corporation, which was created after the state government upgraded the municipal board to corporation status.
Candidates from the BJP-led NDA coalition contested across all wards and secured a majority of seats, enabling them to form the corporation's governing body.
Opposition parties, including the Congress and regional outfits, fielded candidates but failed to break the NDA's lead in the vote count.
Officials from the State Election Commission confirmed the results, stating that the process was conducted peacefully and in accordance with electoral norms.
The victory marks the BJP's first administrative control over Silchar's civic administration since the corporation's establishment.
