Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary inaugurated Bihar's inaugural Vegfed vegetable outlet near Gate‑2 of Patna Zoo, marking the start of a plan to roll out 200 such outlets across the state.
Patna – Bihar's first dedicated vegetable outlet, operated by the farmer‑producer collective Vegfed, was formally opened on Thursday by Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary. The ceremony took place at Gate‑2 of the Patna Zoological Park, a site chosen for its easy accessibility to city residents.
The Vegfed outlet is intended to supply fresh, locally sourced vegetables at prices that are affordable for consumers while ensuring fair returns for farmers. By cutting intermediaries, the model aims to streamline the supply chain from farm to table.
During the inauguration, officials announced that this outlet is the pilot of a larger rollout. Under the first phase, 200 Vegfed outlets will be established across Bihar, targeting both urban neighborhoods and semi‑rural markets. The expansion is expected to boost farmer incomes and improve food security for low‑ and middle‑income households.
State authorities said the project aligns with broader agricultural reforms aimed at modernising market infrastructure and reducing post‑harvest losses. Implementation will be coordinated with local panchayats and market committees to ensure smooth operations.
The initiative reflects Bihar's push to enhance agribusiness connectivity and provide citizens with reliable access to quality produce, a move welcomed by consumer groups and farmer associations alike.
