Bhopal's Rs 26 crore JP Hospital wing remains shut for 18 months, patients wait

The newly built five‑storey, Rs 26 crore wing of JP Hospital in Bhopal, equipped for extra beds, operation theatres and critical care, has stayed unused for a year and a half, leaving patients to wait outside amid parked cars and discarded alcohol bottles.
The five‑storey extension of JP Hospital in Bhopal, constructed at a cost of Rs 26 crore, was intended to add extra inpatient beds, modern operation theatres and intensive‑care facilities. Although the structure was completed more than a year ago, it has remained closed since its inauguration, with no patients admitted to the new wards.
Local residents and patients report that the building’s entrance porch has become a makeshift waiting area, where vehicles are parked haphazardly and discarded alcohol bottles are often seen on the ground. The lack of access to the promised facilities has forced many to seek treatment at other hospitals, increasing travel time and expenses.
Hospital officials have acknowledged the delay but have not provided a concrete timeline for activating the wing. Administrative clearances and staffing arrangements are cited as pending, despite the infrastructure being ready for use.
