Following Dhanteras, Bhopal’s air quality worsened, with the AQI reaching 197 in TT Nagar on the morning of 7 November. PM2.5 particles were the main contributor, and fireworks on Diwali could further elevate pollution levels.

Bhopal’s air quality deteriorated after the Dhanteras celebrations, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) climbing to 197 in the TT Nagar area on the morning of 7 November. The high reading places the city in the 'unhealthy' category for sensitive groups. According to monitoring data, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was the dominant pollutant, accounting for the majority of the AQI score.

The spike follows the widespread use of fireworks during the Dhanteras festival, which is traditionally observed one day before Diwali. Authorities warn that the upcoming Diwali celebrations could further worsen air quality, especially in densely populated districts.

Environmental experts advise residents to limit outdoor activities, use masks, and keep windows closed during peak pollution hours. The city’s pollution control board has urged the public to adopt cleaner alternatives for festive lighting to mitigate the impact on air quality.
