Telecom regulators have warned that criminals often use stolen identity documents and biometric data to obtain mobile connections in someone else's name. Such fraudulent SIMs can be used for illegal calls, financial scams, and identity theft.

Authorities recommend a quick verification step: log into the official telecom portal or call the service provider's toll‑free helpline, provide your Aadhaar or other ID details, and request a list of all active connections linked to your name. If an unfamiliar number appears, it indicates a possible fake SIM.
