Assam's State Debt Soars 4.5× to ₹1.62 Lakh Crore by 2025, Says Minister

Assam's total debt is set to climb to ₹1.62 lakh crore by 2025, a 4.5‑fold increase from ₹35,690 crore in 2016, the state’s finance minister said today. The rise reflects a combination of infrastructure spending, social welfare schemes and rising borrowing costs. The debt figure includes both short‑term and long‑term loans taken by the state government. Analysts warn that such a steep growth could strain fiscal space and impact future investment plans. The minister added that the government is exploring measures to manage the debt burden while continuing development projects.
