Assam to Set Up Anti-Narcotics Police Task Force, Says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, disclosed plans to establish a dedicated anti‑narcotics task force under the state police. The move aims to strengthen coordination among law‑enforcement agencies and intensify operations against drug trafficking networks operating in the region.

The task force will be staffed by senior police officers and will receive specialized training and equipment to detect, investigate, and dismantle narcotics supply chains. Officials expect the unit to work closely with central agencies such as the Narcotics Control Bureau.

Sarma emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to protect Assam's youth and curb the rising incidence of drug abuse. The government has not yet announced a specific launch date, but the task force is slated to become operational within the next few months.

Stakeholders, including local NGOs and community leaders, have welcomed the proposal, urging swift implementation and robust monitoring to ensure effectiveness.
