The Assam government announced plans to establish rehabilitation centres in every district to curb drug addiction across the state.
The state government of Assam has unveiled a new initiative to set up government‑run drug rehabilitation centres in each of its 33 districts. The move aims to provide accessible treatment and counseling services for individuals battling substance abuse, a problem that has been rising in recent years.
Health officials said the centres will be equipped with medical staff, psychologists and vocational training facilities to support long‑term recovery. Funding for the scheme will come from the state’s health budget, with additional support expected from central government schemes targeting addiction.
The programme is slated to begin rollout by the end of the fiscal year, with pilot centres already identified in Guwahati and Dibrugarh. Authorities hope the network will reduce the prevalence of illicit drug use and curb related crime in the region.
