Assam Govt Renames Barak Valley Secretariat, Shifts 32 Departments to Silchar

The state administration of Assam announced a rebranding of the Barak Valley Secretariat, assigning it a new official name. In conjunction with the renaming, thirty‑two government departments will relocate their primary operations to Silchar, the principal city of the Barak Valley region. The move aims to streamline administrative services and bring governance closer to the local populace. Officials said the restructuring will enhance coordination among departments and improve service delivery in the valley. The decision was communicated through a press release by the Assam government, and the departments are expected to become fully functional from the new premises in the coming weeks.

The shift reflects the government's focus on decentralising administrative functions and addressing regional development priorities. Silchar, already a commercial hub, will now host a larger bureaucratic presence, potentially boosting local employment and infrastructure.

Stakeholders, including local business groups and civil society representatives, have welcomed the initiative, noting that a consolidated secretariat could reduce bureaucratic delays. The government has not disclosed the exact new name of the Secretariat, but confirmed that the change is part of a broader effort to modernise governance in the Barak Valley.
