Assam Government Calls for Underground Power Cables in Guwahati, Seeks More Central Power Allocation

The state government of Assam has formally advocated for the deployment of underground power cables throughout Guwahati, citing benefits such as reduced visual clutter, lower risk of accidental damage and improved reliability of supply. Officials say that moving the network below ground will also help the city cope with rapid urban expansion and frequent weather‑related disruptions.

In parallel, Assam is seeking to increase its utilisation of the power quota allocated by the central government. The state electricity board has submitted a request to the Ministry of Power for a higher share of the centrally‑distributed electricity, arguing that current allocations fall short of the growing demand in Guwahati and surrounding districts.

The proposal is expected to be discussed in the upcoming meeting of the state’s infrastructure committee, where officials will outline the technical and financial roadmap for the underground cabling project and the steps required to secure additional central power resources.
