Heavy monsoon rains have triggered severe flooding in Assam, resulting in 47 fatalities and displacing more than 7.2 million residents across the state.

Heavy monsoon rains over the past week have unleashed widespread flooding across Assam, with rivers such as the Brahmaputra and Barak swelling beyond safe levels.

The Assam government reports 47 confirmed deaths and more than 7.21 lakh people affected, many of whom have been forced to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in relief camps.

State authorities have deployed the Assam Police, Border Security Force and the National Disaster Response Force to rescue stranded residents, while the Assam Disaster Management Authority has activated emergency protocols and coordinated with local NGOs for relief distribution.

Although similar monsoon‑related distress has been reported in Gujarat and Jammu & Kashmir, the focus remains on Assam where the scale of the disaster has prompted a national appeal for additional resources.
