Archaeologists have discovered artifacts in a village in northern Maharashtra that suggest trade links with ancient Rome.
In a recent excavation in a village in northern Maharashtra, a team of archaeologists uncovered a cache of artifacts that point to a trade connection with ancient Rome.
Among the finds were fragments of Roman amphorae, glassware, and a stamped bronze plaque, all dating to the 1st–2nd century CE, indicating that goods were exchanged across the Mediterranean and the Indian subcontinent.
An archaeologist from the Archaeological Survey of India said the discovery sheds new light on the extent of Indo‑Roman trade networks and suggests that local merchants were active participants.
Further excavation is planned to map the extent of the site, and researchers hope to collaborate with international scholars to analyze the artifacts and understand the cultural exchanges of the period.
