The Ministry of Home Affairs has authorized every police station in the country to use a centralized fingerprint database, enabling instant identity verification across India.
New Delhi – The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that all police stations across India will now be linked to a single, nation‑wide fingerprint matching system. The move aims to streamline criminal investigations by allowing officers to run fingerprint searches instantly, without having to travel to regional hubs.
The system, built on the existing Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), integrates data from crime scenes, arrest records and immigration entries into a unified database. When a suspect’s prints are scanned at any police outpost, the software cross‑checks them against millions of records and returns matches within seconds, speeding up suspect identification and evidence verification.
Officials say the rollout will bolster law‑enforcement efficiency, especially in rural and remote areas where forensic resources have been limited. Senior police officials expect a measurable rise in solved cases and faster processing of criminal dossiers, while also emphasizing that data security protocols will be strictly enforced to protect citizens' privacy.
