Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki adopted her moniker after starring alongside N.T. Rama Rao in the 1950 Telugu film Shavukaru.

Sowcar Janaki, a celebrated figure in South Indian cinema, first appeared on the Telugu silver screen in the early 1950s. Her debut came with the film “Shavukaru,” where she shared screen space with legendary actor N.T. Rama Rao. The movie, produced by a regional studio, was well received and marked a turning point in Janaki’s career.

According to film historians, the nickname “Sowcar” – a colloquial term for a wealthy merchant – was bestowed upon her following the success of “Shavukaru.” The moniker quickly stuck, distinguishing her in an industry crowded with talent and becoming an integral part of her public identity.

Janaki’s collaboration with NTR in “Shavukaru” not only launched her into the limelight but also laid the foundation for a prolific career spanning multiple languages and decades. Today, the “Sowcar” prefix remains synonymous with her enduring legacy in Indian cinema.
