An eight-year-old student drowned on Sunday after falling into a deep, water-filled pit in Gandhi Nagar, Indore while playing with friends.

Indore, Madhya Pradesh – On Sunday, a deep pit filled with water in the Gandhi Nagar neighbourhood became the site of a tragic accident. An eight‑year‑old boy, a fourth‑standard student, slipped into the pit while playing with his friends during the school holidays and was unable to escape.

According to local reports, the child entered the water‑logged depression, which was not fenced or marked, and quickly became submerged. Bystanders attempted a rescue, but the depth and murky water hampered their efforts.

Police and municipal officials arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Despite prompt medical assistance, the child was pronounced dead at the spot. Authorities have launched an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the unattended pit being accessible to children.

The incident has raised concerns among residents about the safety of open water bodies in residential areas. Local officials have pledged to survey similar hazards in Gandhi Nagar and to take corrective measures to prevent further tragedies.
