A herd of about 40 wild elephants travelled roughly 300 km from Chhattisgarh and entered the Bargi forest area of Jabalpur, prompting the forest department to issue an alert and deploy over 40 forest staff.

The forest department of Madhya Pradesh confirmed that a group of roughly 40 wild elephants has entered the Bargi forest region on the outskirts of Jabalpur after traversing about 300 kilometres from Chhattisgarh via the Balaghat route. The unexpected presence of the herd has raised concerns about human‑wildlife conflict in the densely populated forest belt.

In response, the department issued an immediate alert and mobilised a team of more than 40 forest personnel to monitor the animals, ensure their safety and prevent any potential damage to nearby villages and agricultural fields. Officials are coordinating with local police and community leaders to keep residents informed and to implement precautionary measures.

The movement marks the first recorded instance of such a large elephant group reaching the Jabalpur forest area from Chhattisgarh. Authorities are tracking the herd’s progress using ground patrols and aerial surveillance, and they have urged the public to avoid the forest trails until the situation stabilises.

The forest department reiterated its commitment to both wildlife conservation and public safety, stating that any necessary interventions will be taken only as a last resort. Residents have been advised to report any sightings promptly.

Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves, with the department emphasizing that the safety of both humans and elephants remains the top priority.
