A teenage girl, four months pregnant, arrived at a district hospital with abdominal pain and alleges she was married against her will to clear her father's debt; child protection agencies have opened an inquiry.
A minor who is four months pregnant reported to a district hospital in Madhya Pradesh complaining of stomach pain. The girl, identified as a teenage girl, disclosed that she is expecting a child and that her pregnancy was discovered during the medical examination.
According to her statement, the marriage was arranged without her consent in order to settle a debt owed by her father. She alleges that the forced union was intended to provide financial relief to her family, violating her personal choice and legal protections for minors.
Following the girl's complaint, the Child Line helpline and the State Child Welfare Committee have taken up the case. Both agencies have initiated a formal investigation to ascertain the circumstances of the marriage, the debt claim, and any potential violations of child protection laws.
Authorities have reminded that child marriage is prohibited under Indian law and that any coercion to marry a minor for financial reasons constitutes a criminal offense. The investigation will determine whether further legal action is warranted against those involved.
