The Tamil Nadu government has increased the compensation payout for families of individuals killed by wildlife from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh, effective from July 1.

The state government announced today that the compensation for families of people killed by wildlife will be doubled from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh, starting July 1. The move comes after a series of incidents involving elephants, tigers and other animals in forested areas of Tamil Nadu.

Previously, the state offered a fixed amount of ₹1 lakh to the next of kin of victims. The new policy aims to provide better financial relief and acknowledges the growing concern over human–wildlife conflicts in the region.

Families of the deceased will now receive the higher amount through the existing welfare schemes, with the payment to be processed within 30 days of the claim. The government has also pledged to strengthen wildlife monitoring to reduce future incidents.

A spokesperson from the Tamil Nadu Forest Department said the decision was taken after consultations with wildlife experts and community representatives, emphasizing the state's commitment to both human safety and wildlife conservation.
