Eleven members of the Lahorighat Regional Panchayat have resigned from the Congress party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party as the Nagaon by‑poll approaches.

In the run‑up to the Nagaon by‑poll in Assam, a group of local leaders from the Lahorighat Regional Panchayat announced a collective shift in party allegiance. Eleven panchayat members tendered their resignations from the Indian National Congress and formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The resignations were made public through a joint statement, indicating that the members believe the BJP better represents the development aspirations of their constituency. Their move comes at a critical juncture, with the by‑poll expected to test the strength of both national parties in the region.

Political analysts note that the defection could alter the electoral calculus in Nagaon, where the Congress has traditionally enjoyed a strong grassroots network. The BJP, buoyed by the new entrants, is likely to intensify its campaign efforts ahead of the voting day.

The development was reported by India Today NE, which highlighted the significance of the shift for the upcoming election dynamics in Assam's central districts.
