During the ongoing local body polls in Andhra Pradesh, the ruling YSRCP and opposition TDP have lodged mutual charges over alleged irregularities.
The state’s local body elections, which began earlier this week, have entered a contentious phase as both the Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) publicly blamed each other for procedural violations.
YSRCP leaders claimed that TDP cadres were attempting to influence voter turnout in several gram panchayat wards, alleging the distribution of cash and material incentives to sway votes. The party urged the Election Commission to intervene and ensure a level playing field.
In response, TDP officials accused the ruling party of misusing government machinery, pointing to reports of YSRCP officials allegedly pressuring local officials to delay the counting process in areas where the opposition enjoys strong support. The TDP demanded a transparent audit of the polling process.
Election officials, while acknowledging the complaints, said that standard monitoring mechanisms are in place and that any proven violations will be dealt with under the Representation of the People Act. The polls are scheduled to conclude on Saturday, with results expected later in the week.
