Around half of the candidates fielded by the BJP and Congress in Rajasthan’s municipal elections belong to the Gen Z age group, indicating a notable shift toward younger representation.
The upcoming municipal elections in Rajasthan have seen a marked influx of young aspirants. Data released by the state election commission shows that 51% of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidates and 49% of the Indian National Congress’s candidates are aged between 18 and 35, the demographic commonly identified as Generation Z.
Party officials say the move reflects an effort to connect with a youthful electorate that is increasingly vocal on issues such as employment, digital infrastructure and climate resilience. Both parties have highlighted the candidates’ familiarity with social media platforms as a tool to engage voters directly.
Analysts note that while the percentages signal a generational shift, the overall impact will depend on voter turnout and the ability of these young candidates to translate online popularity into votes at the polling booths.
