World Bank Finds Sharp Rise in Pakistan’s Extreme Poverty

A new World Bank report indicates that the share of people living in extreme poverty in Pakistan has increased sharply over the past year.

The World Bank released a report this week highlighting a worrying surge in extreme poverty across Pakistan. According to the findings, the proportion of the population living below the international extreme‑poverty line has risen noticeably compared with previous assessments.

The analysis points to a combination of persistent macro‑economic headwinds, including high inflation and sluggish growth, as key drivers of the deterioration. Limited job creation and rising food prices have further strained household incomes, pushing more families into hardship.

The Bank cautioned that without decisive policy interventions, the upward trend could undermine Pakistan’s development goals and exacerbate social instability. It urged the government to prioritize inclusive growth measures, strengthen social safety nets, and address structural bottlenecks in the economy.

International observers noted that the rising poverty levels could have broader regional implications, potentially affecting migration patterns and cross‑border economic ties. The report calls for coordinated efforts between national authorities and development partners to reverse the trajectory.

The World Bank will continue to monitor Pakistan’s poverty indicators and provide technical assistance to support targeted poverty‑reduction programmes.
