A woman in Maharashtra was deceived out of six lakh rupees after being promised marriage prospects at a MetroMonial site, police say.
Police in Maharashtra have registered a case after a woman reported being swindled of six lakh rupees. The accused allegedly approached her at a location referred to as the MetroMonial site, promising to arrange a marriage and showcasing a fabricated future together. Believing the proposal, the victim handed over the money as a dowry or wedding advance.
Investigators say the fraudster used photographs and false documents to create a convincing narrative of a forthcoming marriage, thereby extracting the large sum. The woman filed a complaint, prompting the police to launch an inquiry, seize the suspect's mobile devices and begin tracing the financial trail.
Authorities have warned the public about similar matrimonial scams that exploit emotional vulnerability. The case is being treated under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with cheating and criminal breach of trust, and the accused could face imprisonment if convicted.
