A woman tried to stop a police van transporting detained demonstrators at Delhi's Jantar Mantar during a protest over alleged electoral‑roll irregularities.
Delhi police escorted a group of detained protesters away from Jantar Mantar on a police van on Saturday. The demonstrators had gathered to demand action against alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls, a matter that has drawn criticism of the Election Commission.
During the removal, a woman stepped in front of the vehicle and attempted to block its progress, causing a brief standoff. Police officers managed to move the van forward after a few minutes, and the woman was taken into custody for obstructing law‑enforcement duties.
The incident has been likened to a similar episode involving activist Rhiya Ahir in Mumbai earlier this year, underscoring a growing pattern of direct confrontations with police during election‑related protests.
Authorities have not released details about any injuries or further arrests related to the Jantar Mantar episode. The protest remains part of a broader dissent against the Election Commission's handling of voter‑list concerns.
The police have said they will investigate the woman's actions while maintaining that the removal of the protesters was carried out in accordance with law and public order requirements.
