Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that all applicants who meet the criteria under the Citizenship Amendment Act will be granted Indian citizenship by 31 December.

Kolkata, November 8 (HT) – West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari told reporters that the state government will ensure that every applicant who qualifies under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) receives Indian citizenship by the end of the year, with a target date of December 31.

Adhikari said the administration has accelerated verification processes and is coordinating with central authorities to meet the deadline. He emphasized that the move is intended to provide legal certainty to eligible individuals and to uphold the spirit of the legislation passed in 2019.

The CM added that officials are monitoring progress daily and will address any bottlenecks promptly. He urged eligible applicants to complete required documentation without delay to facilitate smooth issuance of citizenship certificates.

No further details on the number of pending applications were disclosed, but the statement signals the state’s commitment to fulfill the central government’s timeline for the CAA scheme.
