The fragmented Vishnu statue in Khajuraho's Jawari Vaman Temple will have its long‑lost head reattached by November after being found in the temple’s store room.
The historic Jawari Vaman Temple in Khajuraho, a UNESCO‑listed site, houses a fragmented stone image of Lord Vishnu whose head has been missing for decades. The missing crown‑shaped head was recently uncovered in the temple’s storage chamber during routine inventory, ending a long‑standing mystery.
Conservation experts have been commissioned to restore the statue to its original form. The restoration work, which includes careful cleaning, structural reinforcement and the precise re‑attachment of the head, is slated for completion by the end of November. The case had earlier reached the Supreme Court, prompting authorities to ensure the idol’s preservation under legal oversight.
Restoring the Vishnu idol is seen as a significant cultural milestone for the region, reinforcing Khajuraho’s heritage and religious importance. Temple officials expect the fully restored image to attract pilgrims and tourists alike once the work is finished.
