Residents of a Chhattisgarh village gathered to welcome a newborn elephant and are organizing a traditional Chhathi ceremony for the animal.
A newborn elephant entered a remote village in Chhattisgarh earlier this week, prompting an enthusiastic reception from the local community. Villagers, many of whom depend on forest resources for their livelihood, gathered near the animal's enclosure to offer food and water.
The community has announced plans to perform a Chhathi ceremony, a ritual traditionally associated with gratitude and protection, to mark the baby elephant's arrival. Elders said the ceremony will involve singing, offering of sweets, and prayers for the animal's health and safety.
Local officials have been briefed on the event and are monitoring the situation to ensure the elephant's well‑being while respecting wildlife protection guidelines. The villagers hope the ritual will foster a harmonious relationship between humans and the young pachyderm as it grows.
