The Uyghur Congress welcomed the European Union’s new, stricter policy toward China, citing ongoing detentions of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
The Uyghur Congress, a global advocacy body for the Uyghur diaspora, issued a statement condemning the continued detentions of Uyghurs in Xinjiang and applauding the European Union’s recent decision to adopt a tougher stance toward China.
The EU’s latest measures, which include targeted sanctions and restrictions on certain Chinese officials and entities, are intended to pressure Beijing over alleged human‑rights abuses. The Congress described the move as a sign of growing international solidarity with the Uyghur cause.
In its statement, the Congress highlighted that the detentions of activists, community leaders and ordinary citizens are worsening the humanitarian crisis in the region. It urged the EU to sustain and deepen its pressure, calling for further actions to hold perpetrators accountable.
The EU’s policy shift follows similar calls from several Western governments and human‑rights organisations. The Uyghur Congress said that a firmer European response could help bring global attention to the plight of the Uyghur people and potentially deter further violations.
