Following a helicopter crash in Joshimath, Uttarakhand's government has introduced stricter regulations for Char Dham air‑services, mandating separate clearance for each flight.

The state government of Uttarakhand announced tighter controls on helicopter operations serving the Char Dham pilgrimage after a recent crash near Joshimath. The incident, which involved a helicopter used to ferry pilgrims, prompted officials to review existing safety protocols.

Under the new guidelines, every helicopter flight to the four sacred sites will require a distinct clearance from the aviation authority, rather than a blanket permit for multiple trips. The rule aims to ensure that each sortie meets current safety checks, pilot qualifications and weather assessments.

Authorities also said they will monitor compliance more closely, conducting spot inspections and mandating real‑time reporting of flight plans. The move is intended to restore confidence among pilgrims and residents who rely on air transport to navigate the mountainous terrain.

The revised policy comes as the state seeks to balance the growing demand for faster pilgrimage access with the imperative of preventing further accidents in the fragile Himalayan region.
