Uttarakhand Halts Char Dham Pilgrimage Amid Landslides and Bad Weather

✍️ The New Indian Express 🗓 20 Jul 2026, 02:48 PM 👁 1

The Uttarakhand government has temporarily suspended the Char Dham Yatra after a series of landslides and worsening weather conditions threatened the safety of pilgrims.

The Char Dham Yatra, which began on 12 March, has drawn thousands of pilgrims to the four sacred shrines of Uttarakhand.

In recent days, heavy rains have triggered multiple landslides along the NH 7 corridor, causing road blockages and threatening the safety of travelers.

The state government, citing the deteriorating weather and ongoing rescue operations, has announced a temporary halt to the pilgrimage. Authorities have urged pilgrims to seek alternative routes and have set up emergency shelters at key checkpoints.

The suspension is expected to remain in force until the weather stabilises and the landslides are cleared. Pilgrims are advised to monitor official updates before planning their return to the pilgrimage circuit.
