Uttarakhand Government Steps Up Crackdown on Unrecognised Madrasas, Says CM Dhami

The administration of Uttarakhand, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has announced a renewed drive to enforce compliance among religious schools that lack official recognition. The government’s directive targets madrasas that operate without registration under the state’s education framework, signalling a stricter regulatory stance.

Under the new measures, officials are instructed to conduct systematic inspections of such institutions, verify their curricula, and ensure they meet the statutory requirements for affiliation. Schools found operating outside the legal parameters may face suspension of activities or closure until they obtain the necessary approvals.

The state government justified the crackdown as a step to maintain educational standards, safeguard students’ rights, and prevent the proliferation of unregulated teaching centres. It urged all madrasas to regularise their status promptly to avoid punitive action.
