Uttar Pradesh has reaffirmed its position as the country’s largest tax‑collecting state, outpacing Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, according to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Finance.

The Ministry of Finance released the latest state‑wise tax collection data, confirming Uttar Pradesh as the top contributor to the central exchequer. In the fiscal year 2023‑24, the state collected over ₹1.2 trillion in direct and indirect taxes, a slight increase from the previous year.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu followed, gathering ₹850 billion and ₹780 billion respectively. The figures highlight the growing fiscal discipline and revenue mobilization in these states.

Experts note that Uttar Pradesh’s robust tax administration and expanding industrial base have played key roles in boosting its collections. The state’s revenue department has also implemented digital payment schemes to streamline compliance.

The data will inform future allocations and policy decisions, underscoring the importance of efficient tax administration across the country.
