The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a two‑day closure of all liquor outlets and bars surrounding the upcoming council elections.

The state administration of Uttar Pradesh issued an order that all liquor shops and bars will remain closed for two consecutive days coinciding with the scheduled council elections. The directive aims to minimise any disturbances that could affect the voting process and to promote a peaceful atmosphere on polling day.
Election officials welcomed the move, stating that restricting alcohol sales is a standard precaution in many Indian states during major elections. They added that the closure will be strictly enforced by local police and municipal authorities.
Trade bodies representing liquor retailers expressed concern over the short‑term loss of revenue, but acknowledged the government's responsibility to ensure law and order during the electoral exercise. The ban is expected to be lifted immediately after the voting concludes, restoring normal business operations.
