The Prime Minister’s Fasal Bima Yojana now provides Uttar Pradesh farmers with insurance against crop losses, offering financial protection and reducing risk for the state’s agrarian community.
The Prime Minister’s Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has been rolled out across Uttar Pradesh, giving farmers a safety net against crop losses caused by natural calamities, pest attacks, or market fluctuations.
Under the scheme, eligible farmers can insure up to 100% of their crop area at a premium that is subsidised by the central government. The insurance covers a wide range of crops including wheat, rice, maize, and pulses, ensuring that a majority of the state’s agricultural produce is protected.
Farmers in UP report that the scheme has reduced their financial vulnerability, allowing them to invest in better inputs and technology. The government has also introduced a digital platform for premium payments and claim processing, making the process more transparent and accessible.
So far, the state has enrolled over 2.5 million farmers, with claims being processed swiftly through a network of local insurance agents and the state’s agricultural department. The rollout is seen as a key step in stabilising the livelihoods of millions of rural households in the country’s most populous state.
