Kanpur police reported that a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Uttar Pradesh was forcibly taken to a farmhouse on the outskirts of the city, where he was tied up and his belongings were stolen. The incident occurred just hours after the leader was announced to have been elevated to a new party position, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Investigators said the assailants entered the farmhouse in the early evening, restrained the politician with ropes and fled with cash, jewellery and electronic devices. The victim managed to free himself after a few hours and alerted local authorities.
Kanpur police have opened a criminal investigation, registering a case of robbery and assault. They are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas and have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. The BJP has not released an official statement on the incident, but party officials in the state have expressed concern over the safety of their members.
The incident highlights growing security concerns for political figures in the region, especially during periods of intra‑party reshuffling. Law enforcement officials have pledged to intensify patrols around political gatherings and residences in the coming days.
