US Announces New Tariffs Up to 12.5% on 60 Economies, India Gets Lower Rate

The United States has announced fresh tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 economies following a forced‑labour investigation, while India will face a lower tariff rate.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced a new tariff schedule that will impose duties of up to 12.5% on goods imported from 60 countries, citing concerns over forced labour practices.

India is among the economies targeted, but the tariff rate for Indian products will be lower than the maximum, reflecting the U.S. government’s assessment of the country’s labour standards.

The move follows a U.S. investigation that found evidence of forced labour in the supply chains of several exporting nations. The tariffs aim to pressure governments to enforce stricter labour regulations.

Trade officials say the new duties will be applied to a range of goods, including textiles, machinery and agricultural products, and will take effect in the coming months.
