India’s urban youth unemployment rate rose to 19% in September, with the figure for young women reaching 26.6%. The data, released by the National Statistical Office, highlights growing joblessness among the country’s emerging workforce.

The National Statistical Office (NSO) has reported that the unemployment rate among urban youth in India climbed to 19% in September, a rise from the 17.5% recorded in the previous month. The same data set shows a stark gender disparity, with unemployment among young women standing at 26.6%.

These figures reflect a continued trend of joblessness among the 15‑29 age group in metropolitan areas, where demand for skilled labour has not kept pace with the growing supply of graduates and trainees. Analysts suggest that the gap is widening due to a mismatch between industry needs and the skill sets of recent entrants.

The NSO’s monthly labour market survey, which covers over 200,000 households, indicates that the rise in unemployment is concentrated in sectors such as retail, hospitality and informal services. The data also points to a slowdown in hiring by large firms and a decline in new job creation in the private sector.

Government officials have urged industry bodies to accelerate skill development programmes and to create more entry‑level positions that can absorb the expanding youth workforce. The Ministry of Labour has announced a revised action plan aimed at boosting employment opportunities for young women, including targeted training and entrepreneurship support.

The latest statistics underscore the urgency for coordinated policy action to address the employment challenges faced by India’s urban youth, especially women who are disproportionately affected.
