India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has expanded worldwide, enabling millions of users to transact digitally across borders.

The Unified Payments Interface, launched by the National Payments Corporation of India in 2016, has evolved from a domestic payment system into a global digital finance platform. Within a few years, UPI’s open‑architecture model attracted foreign banks and fintech firms, allowing users in countries such as Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Nepal to link their local accounts to the Indian network.

According to the Organiser, the platform now serves millions of users outside India, facilitating cross‑border transfers, merchant payments and peer‑to‑peer transactions without the need for traditional card infrastructure. Its real‑time settlement and QR‑code based interface have been cited as key drivers of rapid adoption in emerging markets seeking low‑cost, instant payment solutions.

Industry analysts note that UPI’s success lies in its interoperability and the support of a wide range of financial institutions, which together have created a scalable ecosystem. The expansion is expected to deepen financial inclusion globally, as more countries explore integrating UPI‑compatible services into their own payment landscapes.
