A nationwide UPI disruption today stopped transactions above ₹2,000, prompting users to revert to cash.
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) experienced a system-wide outage today, affecting all major banking apps and payment platforms across India. The disruption began in the early morning and quickly escalated, causing transactions above ₹2,000 to fail or remain pending.
Consumers reported that payments exceeding the ₹2,000 threshold were stuck in limbo, with no confirmation of success or failure. Many users, unable to complete digital payments, turned to cash for everyday purchases, reviving concerns about a cash‑only fallback.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees UPI, acknowledged the issue on its official channels and assured that technical teams were working round the clock to restore full functionality. Users were advised to avoid high‑value digital transfers until the service stabilises.
