UP Proposes Rs 1,000 Stamp Duty on Rs 2 Lakh Rent to Boost Formal Leasing

Uttar Pradesh is proposing a flat Rs 1,000 stamp duty for annual rents up to Rs 2 lakh, aiming to reduce transaction costs and encourage formal rental agreements.

The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a proposal to streamline the rental market by capping stamp duty for moderate-income tenants. Under the new draft, a flat fee of Rs 1,000 will apply to lease agreements where the annual rent does not exceed Rs 2 lakh.

This move is designed to lower the financial burden on tenants and landlords, making it more affordable to register rental agreements. By reducing the cost of formalizing these contracts, the state aims to bring a larger share of the rental market into the formal economy.

Currently, stamp duty is often calculated as a percentage of the total lease value, which can be a significant expense for long-term rentals. The proposed fixed charge simplifies the process and removes a major deterrent for many renters who prefer informal, unregistered arrangements.

The initiative is expected to boost transparency in the housing sector while providing a safer legal framework for both parties involved in the rental transaction.
