The University of Western Australia has obtained approval from the University Grants Commission to establish a campus in Chennai, marking a significant expansion of its presence in India.
The University of Western Australia (UWA) received formal approval from India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) to set up a campus in Chennai on 12 September 2024. This decision follows a series of consultations between UWA and the UGC, which assessed the institution’s academic standards and infrastructure plans.
UGC approval is a prerequisite for any foreign university wishing to offer degrees in India. The commission’s endorsement confirms that UWA’s curriculum, faculty qualifications and quality assurance mechanisms meet Indian higher‑education norms.
The new Chennai campus will initially offer postgraduate programmes in Business Management, Computer Science and Environmental Studies, with plans to expand into undergraduate courses within the next two years. UWA aims to attract Indian students seeking a globally recognised degree while fostering academic collaborations with local universities.
The announcement is expected to boost UWA’s visibility in the Indian market and provide students with more international study options. Both UWA and the UGC have expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to enhance research and cultural exchange between the two countries.
