Union Minister Shah addressed a press conference on Thursday, stating that the government will launch a decisive battle against narcotics with the aim of achieving a drug‑free India by 2029. He emphasized that the fight must be comprehensive, involving law‑enforcement, health services and community outreach.
The minister highlighted the rising trend of drug abuse in several states and the associated rise in crime and health crises. Existing measures, he noted, have yielded limited results, prompting the need for a more aggressive and coordinated strategy.
Shah outlined a multi‑pronged plan that includes stricter border controls, faster prosecution of traffickers, expanded rehabilitation centres, and increased funding for awareness campaigns. He also called for stronger collaboration with neighboring countries to curb cross‑border smuggling.
Law‑enforcement agencies welcomed the directive, indicating readiness to mobilise additional resources and personnel. The ministry said detailed guidelines will be issued within the next month, setting clear milestones toward the 2029 target.
