Union Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled plans for a six‑lane bridge over the Teesta River, with an estimated cost of ₹1,176 crore.
New Delhi – Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced a major infrastructure project that will see a six‑lane bridge constructed across the Teesta River. The bridge, slated to cost about ₹1,176 crore, is intended to improve connectivity in the region and reduce travel time for commuters and freight traffic.
The announcement was made during a press briefing where Gadkari highlighted the strategic importance of the Teesta corridor for trade and tourism. He said the project will be executed under the central government's accelerated infrastructure programme and will involve state and private partners.
While detailed design and tendering processes are yet to be released, officials expect the construction to commence within the next fiscal year, with an aim to complete the bridge within three to four years. The development is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and boost economic activity in the surrounding areas.
Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that a modern, high‑capacity bridge will alleviate congestion on existing crossings and provide a reliable route during monsoon seasons when the river often swells.
Further updates on land acquisition, environmental clearances and project timelines will be communicated as the plan moves forward.
