The Left Front has announced its candidature for 26 municipal seats in Tripura’s upcoming urban local body elections, while negotiations on a seat‑sharing arrangement with the Congress party are still underway.
Tripura’s urban local body (ULB) elections are set to take place later this year, with municipal corporations and town committees across the state slated for voting. The contests are closely watched as they often signal broader political trends ahead of state assembly polls.
The Left Front, a coalition led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has declared that it will field candidates for 26 seats in the upcoming municipal elections. The decision reflects the alliance’s strategy to maintain a presence in urban governance despite a shrinking vote share in recent legislative contests.
Parallel to the candidate announcement, the Left Front and the Indian National Congress are engaged in seat‑sharing talks. Both parties aim to avoid splitting the anti‑BJP vote in key municipalities, but no formal agreement has been reached yet. Sources close to the negotiations said the discussions will continue in the coming weeks.
Political analysts note that the outcome of these talks could shape the balance of power in Tripura’s urban councils, where the ruling BJP seeks to consolidate its foothold. The Left Front’s move to contest 26 seats underscores its intent to remain a relevant player in the state’s local politics.
