Tripura legislator Jitendra Chaudhury has publicly rejected the Uniform Civil Code, arguing that it could undermine the state’s unique social fabric.

Tripura’s Member of Legislative Assembly Jitendra Chaudhury voiced strong opposition to the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) during a recent statement. He warned that a single civil law for all citizens could erode the state’s long‑standing social diversity, which is rooted in its multi‑ethnic and cultural composition.
Chaudhury emphasized that Tripura’s distinct customs, personal laws and community practices must be preserved to maintain harmony among its various groups. He called for any legal reforms to respect regional particularities rather than imposing a uniform framework.
The stance reflects broader concerns among several regional leaders who argue that a nationwide UCC may not suit the heterogeneous social landscape of northeastern states. Chaudhury’s remarks add to the ongoing debate over balancing national uniformity with local cultural rights.
