The Tripura High Court rejected a petition citing procedural lapses and confirmed a decade‑long imprisonment for a defendant convicted of possessing 987 kg of cannabis.

The Tripura High Court has affirmed the trial court's judgment that sentenced a man to ten years' imprisonment for being found in possession of 987 kilograms of cannabis. The bench dismissed the appellant's plea that the trial had been marred by procedural irregularities, stating that the record showed no material breach of law.

The case, which involved the seizure of nearly a metric ton of ganja, had drawn attention to the scale of drug trafficking networks operating in the northeastern region. The lower court had imposed the maximum term permissible under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, reflecting the seriousness of the offence.

By upholding the sentence, the High Court sent a clear signal that procedural challenges will not be entertained when the evidentiary basis is robust. The judgment underscores the judiciary's resolve to deter large‑scale drug offenses in Tripura and neighboring states.

Legal experts note that the decision reinforces the precedent that courts may reject procedural pleas if they do not affect the substantive findings. The ruling is expected to bolster ongoing anti‑narcotics operations across the region.
