Tripura's chief minister condemned mandatory puja subscriptions, calling the practice a social cancer.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday denounced the practice of compulsory puja subscriptions, describing it as a 'cancer' that threatens social harmony. He made the remarks during a press conference in Agartala, responding to growing public discontent over religious organisations demanding mandatory contributions for worship services.
The forced subscription scheme, which requires devotees to pay a fixed amount to participate in puja rituals, has been criticised for exploiting faith for financial gain. Several community groups have lodged complaints, alleging that the practice places undue pressure on low‑income families and undermines voluntary worship.
Saha warned that the state government would examine the issue closely and consider legal measures to curb coercive fundraising. He urged religious bodies to respect individual choice and adhere to constitutional provisions that guarantee freedom of religion without compulsion.
